How to Switch to Classic Start Menu in Windows XP

Windows XP introduced a redesigned, two-column Start menu by default, but it also retained the traditional single-column layout used in earlier versions of Windows. Users who preferred the legacy interface of Windows 95, 98, and 2000 could easily revert to it without installing third-party software. This guide covers the straightforward steps to enable the Classic Start Menu in Windows XP through the built-in system properties.

Steps to Enable the Classic Start Menu

  1. Open Start Menu Properties
Right-click an empty space on the Taskbar or right-click the Start button itself, then select Properties from the context menu. Alternatively, open the Control Panel, switch to Classic View if necessary, and double-click Taskbar and Start Menu.

  2. Select the Start Menu Tab
In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window, click on the Start Menu tab located at the top.

  3. Choose the Classic Start Menu Option
You will see two choices: Start menu and Classic Start menu. Click the radio button next to Classic Start menu.

  4. Customize Preferences (Optional)
Next to the Classic Start menu option, click the Customize button if you want to alter advanced behaviors. From this screen, you can add or remove shortcuts, expand Control Panel options as menus, and show or hide Administrative Tools. Click OK when finished customizing.

  5. Apply the Changes
Click the Apply button at the bottom of the properties window, followed by OK to close the dialog box.

The Start button immediately reverts to the classic cascading layout. To return to the default Windows XP layout at any time, repeat these steps and re-select the standard Start menu option.
