How to Join Windows XP to an Active Directory Domain

Joining a Windows XP Professional workstation to an Active Directory domain is a foundational administrative task that centralizes authentication, policy management, and resource access. The process involves verifying prerequisites such as proper network and DNS configuration, specifying the target domain within the system properties, authenticating with authorized domain credentials, and restarting the computer to apply the new membership.

Prerequisites

Before initiating the domain join process, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • Operating System Edition: The machine must be running Windows XP Professional. Windows XP Home Edition does not support joining an Active Directory domain.
  • Network Connectivity: The client must have a stable physical or wireless connection to the local network hosting the Active Directory domain controller.
  • DNS Configuration: The network adapter on the Windows XP client must point directly to the domain's DNS server (typically running on the Domain Controller). Failure to resolve the domain's SRV records via DNS is the most common reason domain joins fail.
  • Administrative Credentials: You must have access to a local administrator account on the XP machine and credentials for an Active Directory account with permission to join computers to the domain.

Step 1: Configure Network and DNS Settings

  1. Click Start and open Control Panel.
  2. Open Network Connections.
  3. Right-click the active network adapter (such as Local Area Connection) and select Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list and click Properties.
  5. Ensure the Preferred DNS server field is populated with the IP address of your Active Directory DNS server.
  6. Click OK on both windows to apply the settings.

Step 2: Access the Computer Name Settings

  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties (alternatively, press Windows Key + Pause/Break).
  2. In the System Properties dialog box, select the Computer Name tab.
  3. Click the Change button located next to the label: "To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change."

Step 3: Enter the Domain Information

  1. In the Computer Name Changes window, locate the Member of section at the bottom.
  2. Select the Domain radio button.
  3. Type the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the Active Directory domain (e.g., corp.example.com) or the NetBIOS domain name.
  4. Click OK.

Step 4: Authenticate to the Domain

  1. A Computer Name Changes prompt will appear requesting administrative credentials.
  2. Enter the username and password of an Active Directory user account authorized to join computers to the domain (format: DOMAIN\Username or username@domain.com).
  3. Click OK.

Step 5: Complete the Join and Restart

  1. After successful authentication, a dialog box will display: "Welcome to the [domain name] domain." Click OK.
  2. A subsequent prompt will inform you that the computer must be restarted for the changes to take effect. Click OK.
  3. Click Close in the System Properties window.
  4. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer immediately.

Upon rebooting, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to view the logon window. Click the Options button to reveal the Log on to drop-down menu, where you can select the domain and log in using Active Directory user accounts.
