Configuring Utility Manager in Windows XP
In Windows XP, the Utility Manager served as a central control panel designed to check the status of and configure the operating system's primary accessibility tools: Magnifier, Narrator, and the On-Screen Keyboard. This article explains how Utility Manager functioned, the settings it provided to automate these tools, and how users accessed and managed them.
Accessing the Utility Manager
Users could open the Utility Manager using the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + U. Alternatively, it could be launched through the Start menu by navigating to All Programs, selecting Accessories, opening the Accessibility folder, and clicking Utility Manager. Because accessibility features often needed to be available before a user logged in, the Windows Key + U shortcut was also functional directly at the Windows XP Welcome and logon screens.
The Management Interface
When launched, the Utility Manager presented a simple dialog window with a list box containing the three supported applications:
- Magnifier (
magnify.exe) - Narrator (
narrator.exe) - On-Screen Keyboard (
osk.exe)
Selecting any of these programs in the list displayed its current execution status (either "Running" or "Not running") alongside manual controls to Start or Stop the process directly from the window.
Automation and Startup Settings
For each individual utility, the Utility Manager provided three primary automation checkboxes that dictated when and how the program should launch:
- Start automatically when I log in: Enabling this option instructed Windows XP to launch the selected application immediately after the current user successfully logged into their Windows account.
- Start automatically when I lock my desktop: This ensured that the accessibility tool remained active or would launch automatically whenever the user locked the computer (via Windows Key + L or the Ctrl+Alt+Delete menu). This was particularly useful for tools like Narrator, allowing visually impaired users to interact with the unlock prompt.
- Start automatically when Utility Manager starts: When checked, opening the Utility Manager interface would immediately trigger the execution of the selected accessibility program without requiring the user to press the "Start" button manually.
Applying Configuration Changes
Configuration settings were customized independently for each of the three tools. To configure a tool, a user selected it from the list, checked or unchecked the desired automation options, and clicked Apply or OK. These preferences were saved to the user's profile registry settings, allowing different user accounts on the same Windows XP machine to maintain distinct startup configurations for Narrator, Magnifier, and the On-Screen Keyboard.
