Backup Utility in Windows XP Professional

Windows XP Professional natively included a built-in data protection tool known as NTBackup (executable as ntbackup.exe), formally labeled as the "Backup or Restore Wizard." This article provides a clear overview of NTBackup, covering its primary capabilities, how to access it, and its role in protecting user files and system configurations in the Windows XP operating system.

What Was NTBackup?

NTBackup was a legacy backup utility carried over from Windows NT and Windows 2000. While Windows XP Home Edition required users to manually install the tool from the installation disc, Windows XP Professional included it natively, pre-installed and ready to use.

The software allowed users to archive individual files, folders, and critical system components into a single file with the .bkf (Backup File) extension or write them directly to supported magnetic tape drives.

Key Features and Capabilities

NTBackup provided both a guided interface for novice users and an advanced mode for system administrators:

  • Backup or Restore Wizard: A step-by-step assistant that guided users through backing up personal files, all files on a computer, or restoring previously saved archives.
  • Backup Types: Supported five standard backup methods:
    • Normal: Backs up all selected files and clears the archive bit.
    • Copy: Backs up all selected files without altering the archive bit.
    • Incremental: Backs up only files that changed since the last backup and clears the archive bit.
    • Differential: Backs up changed files without resetting the archive bit.
    • Daily: Backs up files modified on that specific day.
  • System State Backup: Allowed users to back up critical system components, including the Windows Registry, COM+ Class Registration database, and system boot files.
  • Automated System Recovery (ASR): A two-part disaster-recovery solution combining a backup of the system partition with an ASR floppy disk to restore a non-booting system.
  • Scheduling: Integrated directly with the Windows Task Scheduler, allowing automated recurring backups.

How to Access the Utility

Users could open NTBackup in Windows XP Professional through the graphical interface or the command line:

  1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.
  2. Alternatively, open the Run dialog (Windows Key + R), type ntbackup.exe, and press Enter.

Retirement and Legacy

NTBackup was phased out with the release of Windows Vista, which introduced a completely redesigned tool called Windows Backup and Restore using Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd) files rather than the .bkf format. To assist users transitioning away from Windows XP, Microsoft later released a standalone restore utility to extract files from legacy .bkf archives on newer versions of Windows.
