Windows Mobile 6.5 Stock Tracking Tools

During the era of Windows Mobile 6.5, tracking equities relied on a combination of hardware manufacturer interfaces, Today Screen plugins, and early mobile widgets. While the base operating system lacked a dedicated standalone stock application, users had several powerful native and third-party tools to monitor the financial markets in real time directly from their home screens.

HTC Sense and TouchFLO 3D Stock Tab

The most widely used "native" stock solution on Windows Mobile 6.5 came pre-installed on devices from HTC, such as the HTC HD2 and Touch Pro2. HTC replaced the default operating system interface with its proprietary TouchFLO 3D (later branded as HTC Sense).

This interface featured a dedicated Stock tab powered by Yahoo! Finance. It allowed users to:

  • Add custom watchlists by ticker symbol or company name.
  • View real-time or delayed quotes along with daily price movements and percentage changes.
  • Tap individual stocks to view detailed performance metrics, intraday charts, and multi-year historical graphs.
  • Set automatic background update intervals over Wi-Fi or cellular data.

CHome (Titanium) Stock Panels

Windows Mobile 6.5 introduced "Titanium" (internally called CHome), a sliding-panel home screen designed for finger-friendly navigation. While Microsoft did not include an out-of-the-box stock panel, the extensible architecture led to multiple community-developed solutions.

Developers on platforms like XDA-Developers built custom CHome plugins (often packaged as .cab files) that inserted a dedicated Stock panel into the sliding list. These plugins retrieved data via XML APIs from Google Finance or Yahoo! Finance, allowing users to scroll horizontally through their favorite tickers directly from the main lock or home screen.

Spb Finance and Spb Mobile Shell

Spb Software was the premier utility developer for Windows Mobile, offering two distinct ways to monitor the market:

  • Spb Finance: A specialized Today Screen plugin that embedded real-time stock ticker tapes, portfolio valuation tools, and currency exchange tracking directly into the classic Windows Mobile interface. It supported complex portfolio management, dividend tracking, and detailed charting.
  • Spb Mobile Shell: A full home screen replacement alternative to HTC Sense that included modular financial widgets. Users could drop compact stock tracker cards onto their primary dashboard.

Microsoft MSN Money Widget

With the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft introduced the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Through this store, Microsoft provided an official MSN Money widget. This tool functioned as a lightweight touch application that integrated with the user's MSN portfolio, showing market indices (Dow Jones, S&P 500, NASDAQ) alongside custom stock watchlists.

Legacy Today Screen Plugins

For users who preferred the classic Windows Mobile 6.1-style Today Screen over the Titanium interface, several third-party plugins remained functional on 6.5:

  • SBSH PocketWeather / Mobile Suite: Often paired with custom scripts to pull RSS or financial feeds directly onto the Today Screen.
  • Pocket Stock: A lightweight plugin designed to display a scrolling ticker banner at the bottom of the home screen without consuming significant RAM or battery life.
  • Resco Today Plugin: A customizable screen space that allowed users to assign financial data feeds and monitor selected stocks alongside calendar events and system tasks.
