Windows Mobile 6.5 SDK Emulator Configurations
The Windows Mobile 6.5 Software Development Kit (SDK)—packaged formally as the Windows Mobile 6.5 Developer Toolset—provided developers with a suite of Device Emulator images to test mobile applications across different hardware form factors. These images were divided into two primary operating system editions: Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional for touchscreen-enabled pocket PCs and Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard for non-touch smartphones. Each edition included distinct configurations defined by screen resolution, orientation, and physical pixel density.
Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional Emulator Images
The Professional images represented touch-screen hardware powered by Windows Embedded CE 5.2. These configurations allowed testing of touch-optimized interfaces, on-screen gestures, and the redesigned honeycomb Start menu introduced in Windows Mobile 6.5.
- WVGA (480 × 800 pixels): Designed for high-end flagship devices with wide-aspect touchscreens. This configuration was the primary target for modern high-definition user interfaces.
- VGA (480 × 640 pixels): Tailored for standard 4:3 high-resolution displays commonly found in enterprise handhelds.
- WQVGA (240 × 400 pixels): Targeted mid-tier devices utilizing wide-screen displays with lower pixel density.
- QVGA (240 × 320 pixels): Maintained compatibility testing for legacy and standard-resolution touch devices.
- Square VGA (480 × 480 pixels): Configured for square-screen form factors equipped with physical sliding or front-facing QWERTY keyboards alongside touch displays.
- Square QVGA (240 × 240 pixels): Intended for low-resolution square-screen touch devices.
Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard Emulator Images
The Standard images simulated devices lacking touchscreens, requiring navigation via a directional pad, soft keys, and numeric or QWERTY keypads.
- QVGA Portrait (240 × 320 pixels): The standard layout for traditional candybar-style smartphones.
- QVGA Landscape (320 × 240 pixels): Designed for wide-screen messaging devices featuring front-facing horizontal displays above full QWERTY keyboards.
- Square (240 × 240 pixels): Targeted compact messaging devices with square, non-touch screens.
Core Emulated Hardware Environment
All bundled images ran on the Microsoft Device Emulator (standalone ARMv4I architecture emulation) and shared identical foundational specifications:
- Processor Architecture: ARMv4I-compatible virtual core.
- Memory Allocations: RAM allocations ranged from 128 MB to 256 MB depending on the display resolution (WVGA and VGA images allocated higher memory pools).
- Networking and Connectivity: Built-in support for NE2000 virtual network adapters for ActiveSync/Direct Push testing, along with cellular simulation interfaces for testing telephony, SMS, and data connections via the Cellular Emulator utility.
