Windows Mobile 6.5 Contact Category Options

This article provides an overview of the category tagging options available for contacts in Windows Mobile 6.5. It covers the built-in default categories, the ability to create custom category tags, multi-category assignment support, and how these tags were used to filter contacts and sync with desktop email clients.

Default Built-in Categories

Windows Mobile 6.5 inherited its contact management architecture directly from the Microsoft Outlook ecosystem. When creating or editing a contact, the operating system provided a standardized list of predefined categories to organize address book entries:

  • Business
  • Holiday
  • Personal
  • Seasonal
  • VIP

Depending on the specific device build and synchronization state with a desktop Outlook profile, additional default tags such as Key Customer, Hot Contacts, Miscellaneous, and Favorites might also appear in the selection list.

Custom Category Creation

In addition to the predefined list, Windows Mobile 6.5 allowed full customization of contact categories directly from the handset. Users could tap the "Categories" field within a contact card and select the "New" button to type any custom text tag. Once created, a custom category became globally available within the contact database, allowing it to be assigned to other existing or future contacts without requiring recreation.

Multi-Category Tagging

Windows Mobile 6.5 supported multi-tagging functionality. Instead of restricting a contact to a single label, the interface presented categories alongside checkboxes. Users could check multiple boxes for a single entry, enabling a contact to be classified simultaneously under multiple tags, such as both "Business" and "VIP."

Contact Filtering and Views

The primary utility of categories in Windows Mobile 6.5 was database filtering. At the top of the main Contacts application, a dedicated category filter dropdown allowed users to quickly switch between views. Selecting a specific category dynamically filtered the contact list to display only matching entries, alongside options to view "All Contacts" or contacts marked as "No Category."

Synchronization with Microsoft Exchange and Outlook

Categories assigned in Windows Mobile 6.5 were fully integrated with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and desktop Microsoft Outlook via Windows Mobile Device Center. Any category assigned, created, or modified on the mobile device synced two-way with the corresponding Outlook contacts database, preserving custom category labels and color-coding schemes across platforms.
