Windows Mobile 6.5 Bluetooth Audio Routing Controls
Windows Mobile 6.5 offered limited native audio routing controls, relying primarily on basic profile management and contextual in-call toggles rather than a unified audio routing center. Out of the box, the operating system handled audio routing through built-in support for the Headset Profile (HSP), Hands-Free Profile (HFP), and Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). Users had specific, native touchpoints within the Phone application and the Bluetooth settings menu to manage where audio was directed.
In-Call Audio Routing
During an active voice call, the native Phone interface provided direct controls to switch the call path:
- Bluetooth Toggle: When a paired hands-free device was connected, the dialer interface displayed a dedicated "Bluetooth" button. Tapping this button toggled call audio between the connected Bluetooth headset and the device's physical handset earpiece.
- Speakerphone Integration: Users could divert the call from the Bluetooth headset directly to the external speakerphone using the native on-screen "Speaker" toggle, which automatically disengaged the Bluetooth audio path.
Profile-Level Routing in Bluetooth Settings
Windows Mobile 6.5 did not feature a dynamic output selector for general system sounds. Instead, routing was managed at the service level through the Bluetooth Partnerships menu:
- Wireless Stereo (A2DP): Under the properties of a paired audio device, users could enable or disable the "Wireless Stereo" service. Enabling and connecting this service forced all high-quality multimedia audio (such as playback from Windows Media Player Mobile) to route through the Bluetooth device.
- Hands-Free (HFP/HSP): Users could independently check or uncheck the "Hands Free" service. Disabling this service prevented phone call audio from transferring to the peripheral, leaving it on the handset.
Multimedia Audio Behavior
For media and non-call audio, native routing was largely automatic rather than manually configurable:
- Automatic Fallback: If an A2DP device was connected, media streams were redirected to the headset by default. If the connection was terminated, audio automatically reverted to the device's internal speaker.
- System Sound and Mono Restrictions: Windows Mobile 6.5 natively lacked a control to route general system sounds, navigation prompts, or media over standard mono (HSP/HFP) Bluetooth headsets. Media routing natively required a supported stereo A2DP connection, with no native software toggle to bridge standard media streams into a mono hands-free channel.
