Install Windows Mobile 6.5 Apps to SD Card via Registry

This article explains how modifying system registry keys in Windows Mobile 6.5 allowed users to bypass strict internal memory constraints by directing application installations straight to external storage cards. By altering the behavior of the built-in cabinet installer, users gained the ability to prompt for target directories or automatically route program files to removable media.

The Storage Challenge in Windows Mobile 6.5

Legacy Windows Mobile 6.5 devices were notoriously limited by small internal flash storage partitions. When installing applications through Cabinet (.cab) files, the operating system's package manager—wceload.exe—frequently targeted the internal device memory by default. This rapidly depleted system storage, leading to degraded device performance, inability to receive text messages, and low-memory warning prompts.

The Role of the Application Installer Registry Keys

The installation workflow in Windows Mobile was governed by configuration settings stored within the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) hive. Specifically, the operating system referenced keys under:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apps\Microsoft Application Installer]

Within this key, several values dictated how wceload.exe processed application packages:

  • fAskDest: By default, this DWORD value was often set to 0, which caused the installer to silently deploy packages to internal memory without prompting the user. Changing the value to 1 forced the installer to display a destination selection dialog for every installation, allowing the user to explicitly select "Storage Card."
  • nask: In certain localized builds or carrier-customized ROMs, a string or binary value named nask operated alongside fAskDest to suppress user prompts. Removing or setting this parameter to 0 restored destination queries.

Redirecting Default Installation Paths

Beyond simply enabling the destination prompt, advanced registry edits allowed users to redirect default paths so that installers expecting internal memory would install to external storage automatically.

Under the system shell folders located at:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Explorer\Shell Folders]

Users modified target paths such as Program Files from the default \Program Files to \Storage Card\Program Files. When an installation routine requested the system's standard application directory without offering a user choice, the operating system resolved the pointer to the external directory on the microSD card.

Execution and Persistence

To apply these modifications, users ran mobile registry editors such as Resco Registry, Total Commander, or PHM RegEdit directly on the device. Because the registry changes altered the core parameters that wceload.exe evaluated at runtime, a soft reset finalized the configuration. Once applied, all subsequent CAB file executions routed through the updated installation logic, preserving critical internal device memory.
