How to Configure APN Settings in Windows Mobile 6.5
Configuring Access Point Name (APN) settings on Windows Mobile 6.5 was essential for establishing a 2G or 3G mobile data connection with a cellular carrier. Because older devices often lacked automatic over-the-air provisioning, users had to manually define the APN, modem type, and authentication credentials within the operating system's connection manager. This guide details the step-by-step process required to configure these legacy network parameters to enable mobile internet browsing and data services.
Navigating to Connection Settings
- Tap the Start button located at the top-left or bottom-left of the screen, depending on the device's shell interface.
- Select Settings, then switch to or tap the Connections tab.
- Tap the Connections icon to open the Network Connections manager.
Creating the APN Profile
Windows Mobile 6.5 divided connections primarily into "My ISP" (for general internet access) and "My Work Network" (for corporate networks and VPNs). For standard internet access:
- Under the My ISP heading, tap Add a new modem connection.
- Enter a descriptive name for the connection (e.g., the name of your carrier followed by "Internet").
- In the Select a modem drop-down menu, choose Cellular Line (GPRS) or Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G).
- Tap Next at the bottom of the screen.
Entering Carrier Credentials
- In the Access point name field, type the exact APN
provided by your mobile carrier (for example,
fast.t-mobile.comorepc.tmobile.com). - Tap Next.
- Enter the User name and Password if required by the carrier. For many GSM carriers, these fields could be left blank.
- Leave the Domain field blank unless specifically instructed by an enterprise network administrator.
- Tap Advanced only if your carrier required a specific primary/secondary DNS or static IP address; otherwise, leave these set to server-assigned.
- Tap Finish to save the configuration profile.
Setting the Default Connection
- Return to the main Connections screen.
- Tap the Advanced tab at the bottom.
- Tap Select Networks.
- Ensure that the drop-down menu under "Programs that connect to the Internet should connect using:" is set to My ISP.
- Tap OK in the upper-right corner to exit and apply the changes.
Once configured, opening the built-in Internet Explorer Mobile browser or any network-dependent application would trigger the device to dial the GPRS/3G line, indicated by a small "G", "E", "3G", or "H" icon appearing in the title bar to confirm data transmission.
