Encrypted SD Card Data After Windows Mobile 6.5 Reset
When a Windows Mobile 6.5 device underwent a hard reset, all encrypted data stored on the removable memory card became permanently inaccessible. Because the operating system tied the encryption keys directly to the specific internal state of the device, wiping the phone destroyed the unique cryptographic keys required to read the files, rendering the storage card's contents irrecoverable.
Windows Mobile 6.5 featured a native encryption setting that allowed users and enterprise administrators to automatically encrypt files written to external storage cards. This system used a symmetric key generated by the device's internal cryptographic subsystem. The key was stored securely within the internal flash memory and was tied to the device's unique machine identifier and internal registry state. The encryption operated transparently: while the card was mounted in the host device, authorized users could read and write files without manually entering a password.
Performing a hard reset on Windows Mobile 6.5 restored the device to its original factory state, wiping the internal file system, registry, and secure key storage. Because the encryption key lived solely in this internal memory and was not written to the external card itself, the reset completely erased the key.
Once the reset was complete, the operating system generated a brand-new encryption key upon its first boot. Even though the physical hardware remained identical, the newly generated key could not unlock the data encrypted under the old key. If the memory card was reinserted into the reset phone, another Windows Mobile device, or a desktop PC, the files appeared as corrupted or unreadable binary data.
The only exception to permanent data loss occurred in enterprise environments utilizing Microsoft Exchange Server or Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems with preconfigured key escrow. If the enterprise infrastructure backed up the recovery keys prior to the reset, administrators could theoretically restore access through specialized recovery procedures. Without this enterprise backup, the encrypted data on the memory card was lost forever.
