Disable Windows Mobile 6.5 Startup Sound and Animation
This article explains how users and power developers silenced loud boot chimes and eliminated carrier startup animations on Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. By manipulating specific registry keys, renaming core multimedia files in the system directory, and utilizing custom ROM kitchens, users successfully bypassed the OS boot sequence media to achieve faster, silent device startups.
Registry Adjustments
The primary method for disabling startup sounds and animations involved modifying the Windows Mobile Registry using tools like PHM Registry Editor or Resco File Explorer.
To mute the startup chime, users navigated to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\StartupAnimation] (for HTC
devices) or [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Startup] (for
standard Windows Mobile builds).
Inside this directory, modifying the following values removed the audio:
- WAVFile: Setting the string value to an empty
string (
"") or pointing it to a non-existent path prevented the media layer from loading any audio. - Volume: Setting the
VolumeDWORD value to0muted the sound even if the file attempted to play.
To disable the animated graphic or carrier splash screen, users targeted:
- Enabled: Changing the
EnabledDWORD from1to0completely suppressed the secondary animation phase. - GIFFile: Clearing the path string under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\StartupAnimation\GIFFile]stopped the operating system from rendering the animated boot sequence.
File System Bypass
Because Windows Mobile 6.5 mapped default media directly inside the
\Windows folder, users also disabled startup media by
altering the underlying assets:
- Replacing the Audio File: The system looked for
standard sound files such as
startup.wavorboot.wavlocated in\Windows. Users created a silent 0-second WAV file, named it identically, and overwrote the original file. - Renaming Assets: If write-protection allowed,
renaming the animation files (such as
carrier_boot.giforanimated_splash.gif) forced the OS bootloader to skip the multimedia presentation when the target assets could not be resolved.
Init Sequence Tweaks
For deeper system modification, advanced users altered the Windows CE
boot sequence located in: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Init]
This registry hive dictates the executables launched during boot via
keys like Launch50 or Launch60. When carriers
tethered their animations to standalone executables (such as
carrier_anim.exe), users removed or renamed the key value.
This prevented the process from ever spawning in the boot cycle, saving
system RAM and decreasing the total time to reach the Home or
Manila/Sense screen.
Custom ROM Cooking
For permanent removal without post-boot modifications, power users used ROM kitchens to unpack Windows Mobile 6.5 OEM packages. Chefs removed the OEM startup packages containing the boot audio and animation binaries altogether. Recompiling the OS with these modules stripped out ensured clean, silent, and instant boots directly from cold hardware initialization to the desktop environment.
