Change Windows Mobile 6.5 Keyboard Repeat Delay

This article explains how to modify the auto-repeat delay for physical keyboards on devices running Windows Mobile 6.5. By using a mobile registry editor to alter specific DWORD values within the user control panel registry hive, users can fine-tune both the initial delay before keys repeat and the speed at which characters repeat, followed by a system soft reset to apply the changes.

Required Registry Path

To change the behavior of the hardware keyboard, navigate to the following registry key using a registry editor (such as PHM Registry Editor, Resco Registry, or CeRegEdit):

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]

Key Adjustments

Inside the Keybd key, locate or create the following DWORD values to customize the auto-repeat timing:

  1. InitialDelay

    • Value Name: InitialDelay
    • Type: REG_DWORD
    • Function: Determines the amount of time (pause) a physical key must be held down before the keyboard driver begins repeating the character.
    • Value Data: Enter the delay time in milliseconds (Decimal). For example:
      • 250 for a very short delay (responsive)
      • 500 for a moderate/standard delay
      • 1000 for a longer delay to prevent accidental double keystrokes
  2. RepeatRate

    • Value Name: RepeatRate
    • Type: REG_DWORD
    • Function: Controls how rapidly the character repeats once the initial delay has passed.
    • Value Data: Enter the rate value in characters per second or standard millisecond intervals depending on the device's OEM driver (typically a decimal value between 10 and 30 repetitions per second, or lower values like 0 to 3 on specific WinCE hardware profiles).

Applying the Changes

Registry modifications to the keyboard subsystem do not take effect dynamically. Once the decimal values for InitialDelay and RepeatRate are saved, close the registry editor and perform a soft reset (restart) of the Windows Mobile device to load the new settings into memory.
