Change Windows Mobile 6.5 Default System Font
Modifying the default system font across the Windows Mobile 6.5
interface requires altering specific keys within the Windows CE
registry. The operating system primarily relies on keys located under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GWE to dictate the global
typeface, size, and aliasing rules used across system menus, home
screens, and native applications.
Primary System Font Key: SysFnt
The core registry key responsible for the fundamental graphical user interface font is:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\SysFnt]
Within this key, the following values control the font attributes:
- Nm (String / REG_SZ): Specifies the font family name (such as "Tahoma", "Segoe UI", or "Nina").
- Ht (DWORD): Defines the font height in logical units. Changing this scales the global interface text size.
- Wt (DWORD): Defines the font weight (e.g.,
400or0x00000190for normal,700or0x000002BCfor bold). - It (DWORD): Specifies italicization (
0for off,1for on).
Font Aliasing: FontAlias
Windows Mobile 6.5 hardcodes specific font names like "Nina" or "Tahoma" into various shell components. To force all interface elements to render a new typeface without missing application-specific calls, font redirection is handled via:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\V1\FontAlias]
Adding string entries here redirects system font requests to a target font:
- Nina (REG_SZ): Set the value data to the exact name of the replacement font.
- Tahoma (REG_SZ): Set the value data to the exact name of the replacement font.
Interface and Menu Font Keys: GWE
To ensure that pull-down menus, title bars, and system popups reflect the new typeface, several keys under the Graphics, Windowing, and Events Subsystem (GWE) must be updated:
- Menu Bar Font:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GWE\Menu\BarFnt]
Value:Nm(REG_SZ) – Name of the font face. - Menu Popup Font:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GWE\Menu\PopFnt]
Value:Nm(REG_SZ) – Name of the font face. - Out of Memory Dialog Font:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GWE\OOMFnt]
Value:Nm(REG_SZ) – Name of the font face.
Font Linking for Fallback Characters
If the new font lacks glyphs for certain languages or symbols, the system falls back using the font linking registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink]
Under this key, create a multi-string (REG_MULTI_SZ)
value with the name of the new font. The value data should point to the
fallback font files located in the \Windows directory (for
example, \Windows\tahoma.ttf,Tahoma).
Applying the Changes
For these registry alterations to take effect:
- Ensure the TrueType font file (
.ttf) is placed in the\Windows\Fontsor\Windowsdirectory. - Update the
SysFnt,FontAlias, andGWEregistry values using a Windows Mobile registry editor. - Perform a soft reset (device reboot) to reload the GDI and GWE subsystems into memory.
