Windows 98 Taskbar Properties Explained

In Microsoft Windows 98, the Taskbar Properties dialog box served as the primary configuration utility for customizing the behavior and appearance of the Windows Taskbar and Start menu. This settings panel allowed users to manage screen real estate, control visibility preferences, organize program shortcuts, and clear recent activity histories, serving as a vital tool for personalizing the desktop user experience.

Taskbar Options Tab

The primary tab, labeled "Taskbar Options," governed the physical behavior and visual indicators of the taskbar across the screen:

  • Always on Top: Ensuring this box was checked kept the taskbar visible even when application windows were maximized. Disabling it allowed running applications to cover the taskbar entirely.
  • Auto Hide: When activated, this feature automatically retracted the taskbar off-screen when not in use. It reappeared only when the user moved the mouse cursor to the border of the screen where the taskbar was anchored, maximizing usable monitor space.
  • Show Small Icons in Start Menu: This setting reduced the icon dimensions within the root of the Start menu, producing a more compact, streamlined menu that occupied less vertical space.
  • Show Clock: Users could toggle the system clock on or off within the system tray (notification area) located on the far right of the taskbar.

Start Menu Programs Tab

The second tab, "Start Menu Programs," focused on managing applications and document tracking:

  • Customizing Start Menu Items: It provided dedicated buttons—"Add," "Remove," and "Advanced"—allowing users to manually insert new shortcuts, delete outdated links, or launch a dedicated Windows Explorer view to arrange nested program folders.
  • Clearing the Documents Menu: The panel included a "Clear" button that wiped the history stored in the Start menu's "Documents" submenu. This removed the list of recently opened files, graphics, and text documents without deleting the actual files from the hard drive, providing users with a quick privacy reset.
