Windows 98 Installation Diagnostic Logs
During the installation of Microsoft Windows 98, the Setup program automatically generates several diagnostic log files to track progress, record hardware detection, and facilitate error recovery. These plain-text and binary files—primarily SETUPLOG.TXT, DETLOG.TXT, DETCRASH.LOG, NETLOG.TXT, and BOOTLOG.TXT—document every phase of the deployment process, providing critical troubleshooting data if an installation freezes, crashes, or fails to complete.
SETUPLOG.TXT
SETUPLOG.TXT is the primary installation log created in the root
directory of the boot drive (typically C:\SETUPLOG.TXT). It
records the overall progress of the Setup process in chronological
order, including user inputs, system file copying, directory creation,
and registry updates. If the installation stops prematurely, Windows 98
Setup reads SETUPLOG.TXT during a restart to determine where the failure
occurred and resume the process through the Safe Recovery mechanism
without repeating completed steps.
DETLOG.TXT
DETLOG.TXT is the hardware detection log located in the root
directory (C:\DETLOG.TXT). During the hardware detection
phase, Setup probes the system's architecture and peripherals.
DETLOG.TXT documents each hardware detection module executed, the
devices detected, resource allocations (such as IRQs, I/O ports, and DMA
channels), and any conflicts encountered. If Setup hangs during the
hardware probe, administrators can inspect the final entries in
DETLOG.TXT to identify the specific device or driver that triggered the
failure.
DETCRASH.LOG
DETCRASH.LOG is a hidden binary file created in the root directory
(C:\DETCRASH.LOG) specifically when a system crash or
freeze occurs during the hardware detection phase. Unlike the text-based
logs, it is designed strictly for machine reading by the Setup utility.
When the system is rebooted and Setup is restarted in Safe Recovery
mode, Setup reads DETCRASH.LOG to identify which hardware detection test
failed, allowing the installer to bypass the offending device check and
proceed with the remaining components.
NETLOG.TXT
NETLOG.TXT records the detection and configuration of networking
components. Located at C:\NETLOG.TXT, this file captures
the installation of network adapters, protocol stacks (such as TCP/IP or
NetBEUI), and network clients. It details network binding orders and
detects driver installation issues specific to local area network
interfaces.
BOOTLOG.TXT
BOOTLOG.TXT records the operating system boot sequence during the
reboots required to finalize installation. Located at
C:\BOOTLOG.TXT, it tracks the initialization of device
drivers, virtual device drivers (VxDs), and core system services,
logging a "Status = Success" or "Status = Failure" entry for each
component. This file highlights driver conflicts that prevent Windows 98
from booting into the graphical user interface for the first time.
