Windows 98 Advanced Troubleshooting Settings
The Advanced Troubleshooting Settings menu in Microsoft Windows 98 was an essential diagnostic utility within the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig). Accessed by clicking the "Advanced" button on the General tab of MSConfig, this menu allowed system administrators and users to isolate hardware conflicts, resolve boot failures, and bypass problematic device drivers by toggling low-level operating system behaviors.
Disable System ROM Breakpoint
This setting prevents Windows 98 from using system ROM addresses to set breakpoints when running in 386 enhanced mode. Checking this box is useful when diagnosing RAM/ROM conflicts or memory errors related to specific BIOS versions.
Disable Virtual HD IRQ
This option stops Windows from using its 32-bit protected-mode virtual hard disk interrupt handling routine. Instead, it forces all hard disk interrupts to be handled through the system's standard ROM BIOS, resolving conflicts with non-standard disk controllers.
EMM Exclude A000-FFFF
Selecting this setting prevents Windows from scanning the upper memory area between addresses A000 and FFFF for free space to allocate. It helps resolve resource conflicts between memory managers and peripheral hardware devices, such as network adapters or video cards.
Force Compatibility Mode Disk Access
This option completely disables 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers, forcing Windows 98 to route all disk operations through 16-bit real-mode drivers or BIOS routines. It was typically used to diagnose hard disk read/write errors and verify driver stability.
VGA 640 x 480 x 16
This setting instructs the operating system to override the currently installed video adapter driver and load the standard VGA driver at 640x480 resolution with 16 colors. It helped recover system usability when corrupted or incompatible third-party graphics drivers prevented a normal desktop load.
Use SCSI Double-Buffering
This option enables double-buffering support for SCSI and certain IDE host adapters. It ensures that memory transfers do not cross 64KB physical boundaries, which prevents data corruption on systems using bus-mastering controllers that cannot handle direct memory access beyond certain limits.
Enable Startup Menu
Enabling this option forces Windows 98 to display the Windows Startup Menu (offering Normal, Logged, Safe Mode, and Command Prompt options) during every system boot without requiring the user to hold down the Ctrl or F8 key.
Don't Show Scandisk After Ungraceful Shutdown
By default, Windows 98 automatically runs ScanDisk if the computer is turned off incorrectly or crashes. Enabling this checkbox suppresses the automatic ScanDisk prompt and scans during the subsequent boot process, shortening reboot times during troubleshooting sessions.
Limit Memory to [X] MB
This option allows users to manually specify the maximum amount of physical RAM Windows 98 can recognize and use. It was commonly used to troubleshoot faulty RAM modules or resolve system instability on configurations containing more than 512 MB of memory.
Disable Fast Shutdown
Windows 98 introduced a fast shutdown feature that bypassed uninitializing device drivers before turning off the system. Because this frequently caused systems to hang on the "Windows is shutting down" screen, disabling fast shutdown restored the classic shutdown behavior to ensure all drivers exited cleanly.
