Windows 95 Default System Alert Sound Files

When Microsoft launched Windows 95, it introduced an expanded multimedia architecture that included dedicated audio files for operating system notifications. Located in the C:\Windows\Media directory, these standard waveform (.wav) files served as the default acoustic cues for system alerts, errors, prompts, and milestones, establishing an iconic auditory identity for personal computing in the mid-1990s.

Core System Alert Audio Files

A clean installation of Windows 95 placed a select group of short, 8-bit and 16-bit PCM .wav files into the Media folder to handle day-to-day alerts:

  • CHORD.WAV: A brief, multi-tone synth burst. This was the most frequently triggered alert in the operating system, mapped by default to common warnings, the Asterisk notification, the Question prompt, and standard Exclamation dialogs.
  • DING.WAV: A sharp, single bell chime. This sound served primarily as the Default Beep, alerting users when they clicked outside of an active modal dialogue or typed an invalid key command.
  • CHIMES.WAV: A light, descending synth cascade. While available for alerts, it was frequently assigned to minor notifications, background events, or alternative warning schemes.
  • TADA.WAV: A triumphant brass-style fanfare. Carried over from Windows 3.1, this file was maintained for completion prompts and celebratory notifications, though it was no longer used as the startup tone.

System Startup and Shutdown Sounds

In addition to standard alert cues, the Windows 95 Media directory contained the operating system's primary entry and exit themes:

  • The Microsoft Sound.wav: Composed by ambient musician Brian Eno, this six-second piece was the signature startup audio played upon loading the desktop environment.
  • Windows Logoff.wav (or mapped shutdown tones): A descending musical fade used to confirm system shutdown.

Default Event Mapping in Windows 95

Windows 95 managed these sounds through the Sounds applet inside the Control Panel. By default, standard error and alert mappings included:

System Event Default Audio File
Asterisk CHORD.WAV
Critical Stop CHORD.WAV
Default Beep DING.WAV
Exclamation CHORD.WAV
Question CHORD.WAV
Start Windows The Microsoft Sound.wav

Users with the Windows 95 Plus! companion pack received expanded desktop sound schemes (such as "Utopia," "Jungle," and "Robot"), but the minimalist CHORD.WAV, DING.WAV, and CHIMES.WAV set remained the universal baseline for standard hardware alerts across the base OS.
