Windows 3.11 Moving Text Screen Saver
The default screen saver in Microsoft Windows 3.11 that displayed moving text across the screen was called "Marquee" (or "Marquee Display"). This utility allowed users to display custom scrolling text against a solid background to prevent phosphor burn-in on contemporary cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitors. This article covers the origins, functionality, customization options, and legacy of this classic Windows feature.
The Marquee Screen Saver
Introduced with Windows 3.1 in 1992 and included in Windows 3.11
(Windows for Workgroups), Marquee was stored as the executable file
SSMARQUE.SCR in the Windows System directory. It was one of
several built-in screen savers shipped with the operating system,
alongside others like Mystify, Flying Windows, and Blank Screen.
Features and Customization
Users could access and configure Marquee through the "Desktop" icon in the Windows Control Panel. It was widely popular because it offered a high degree of personalization compared to purely geometric screen savers:
- Custom Text: Users could type custom messages, status updates, jokes, or office notes that would continuously scroll across the display.
- Font and Formatting: Leveraging the TrueType font engine introduced in Windows 3.1, users could choose any installed font, style (bold, italic), and point size.
- Colors: Both the text color and the solid background color could be modified to match personal preferences.
- Position and Speed: The text could be set to scroll across the center of the screen, along the top or bottom, or positioned randomly. A speed slider allowed users to determine how fast the text traveled from right to left.
- Password Protection: Like other Windows 3.11 screen savers, Marquee included an optional password feature to lock access to the desktop until the correct password was entered.
Purpose and Legacy
During the 1990s, CRT monitors were vulnerable to permanent image retention (burn-in) if static images were left on the screen for extended periods. Marquee solved this issue by ensuring that pixels were constantly changing as the text moved across the dark background.
The Marquee screen saver remained a staple in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me. While newer versions of Windows eventually phased out 2D Marquee in favor of modern graphics and the hardware-accelerated "3D Text" screen saver, Marquee remains one of the most recognizable and nostalgic personalization tools from the 16-bit Windows era.
