Windows 3.11 Desktop Wallpaper System File

In Microsoft Windows 3.11, the configuration for the desktop wallpaper is stored inside the WIN.INI system file under the [Desktop] section. Before the Windows Registry became the central repository for operating system configurations in later versions, Windows relied on plain-text initialization (.INI) files located in the main system directory to manage user preferences and hardware settings.

The WIN.INI file is located in the primary Windows installation path, typically C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI. Inside this file, Windows maintains configuration settings for the user interface, keyboard, printer environments, and desktop appearance.

The specific directives controlling the wallpaper inside the [Desktop] section include:

  • Wallpaper: Defines the path and filename of the bitmap image used as the background (e.g., Wallpaper=arcade.bmp). Windows 3.11 natively supported uncompressed 8-bit or lower .BMP and .RLE image formats. If no wallpaper is selected, this value remains blank (e.g., Wallpaper=(None) or Wallpaper=).
  • TileWallpaper: Determines whether the image is tiled across the screen or centered. A value of 1 tiles the image, while 0 centers it.

While these entries could be edited manually using a text editor such as Notepad or the System Configuration Editor (SYSEDIT.EXE), users typically modified them through the graphical interface by opening the Control Panel and selecting the Desktop applet. Modifying the settings through the Desktop control panel updated the entries in WIN.INI immediately upon clicking "OK."
