Windows 3.11 Desktop Grid Alignment Spacing

In Microsoft Windows 3.11, desktop grid alignment and spacing were controlled through the Desktop dialog in the Control Panel using two primary settings: Granularity under the Sizing Grid section and Spacing under the Icons section. These controls allowed users to establish invisible desktop grid boundaries to align moving windows and dictate the pixel spacing between minimized application icons and desktop elements.

The Icon Spacing Setting

To adjust the distance between icons on the desktop, Windows 3.11 provided the Icon Spacing setting. Located under the Icons group box inside the Desktop control panel, this value determined the horizontal spacing between icons in pixels.

  • Default Value: Typically set to 75 pixels.
  • Function: Increasing this number prevented long icon titles from overlapping adjacent icons, while decreasing it allowed more icons to fit within a smaller desktop area.
  • Configuration File: This setting directly modified the IconSpacing= entry under the [Desktop] section of the WIN.INI configuration file.

The Granularity Setting

For overall desktop window alignment, the Granularity setting controlled the snap-to-grid behavior for moving and resizing windows. Found under the Sizing Grid group box in the same Desktop dialog, it set the scale of an invisible coordinate grid across the desktop workspace.

  • Values: Allowed values ranged from 0 to 49.
  • Function: A value of 0 disabled the snap-to-grid feature entirely, allowing smooth, pixel-by-pixel movement. Setting the value higher than 0 multiplied the value by 8 pixels (for example, a setting of 1 created an 8-pixel grid, while a setting of 2 created a 16-pixel grid). Windows would automatically snap to these grid intervals when moved or resized.
  • Configuration File: This corresponded to the GridGranularity= entry under the [Desktop] section of the WIN.INI file.

How to Access the Settings

  1. Open the Main program group inside Program Manager.
  2. Launch the Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Desktop icon.
  4. Modify the pixel value in the Spacing field to adjust icon grid intervals, or change the Granularity value to alter window snapping behavior.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes immediately across the desktop session.
