How to Start Windows 3.11 in Standard Mode
This article explains the command-line parameter required to launch Microsoft Windows 3.11 in Standard Mode, details what the parameter does, and clarifies the critical distinction between retail Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 regarding operating mode support.
To force Microsoft Windows 3.11 to execute in Standard Mode, launch
Windows from the MS-DOS prompt using the command win /s.
Alternatively, the parameter win /2 can be used to achieve
the exact same result.
When invoked with the /s switch, the operating system
bypasses 386 Enhanced Mode and loads the 286 protected-mode kernel
(DOSX.EXE). Standard Mode does not utilize 386-specific
features, such as 386 virtual memory via paging, 32-bit disk access, or
the ability to run MS-DOS applications inside background desktop
windows. Instead, MS-DOS programs run full-screen, and multitasking is
limited to Windows-native applications. This mode was primarily used to
troubleshoot hardware incompatibilities, conserve RAM, or isolate driver
issues.
A common point of confusion involves the difference between Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11:
- Windows 3.11: A maintenance release of Windows 3.1
distributed primarily to address driver updates and network fixes. It
fully supports running in Standard Mode using the
win /sparameter on compatible 80286 and 80386 systems. - Windows for Workgroups 3.11: Dropped support for
Standard Mode entirely. It requires an 80386 processor or higher and
runs exclusively in 386 Enhanced Mode. Entering
win /sin Windows for Workgroups 3.11 returns an error indicating the switch is invalid or unsupported.
