How to Add Printers in Windows 3.11
In Microsoft Windows 3.11, adding new printer models was primarily handled through the Printers utility located inside the Control Panel. While users frequently interacted with the Print Manager to monitor active print queues, the actual installation, configuration, and driver management for new hardware took place in the Control Panel's Printers dialog. This tool allowed users to install native Windows drivers or load manufacturer-provided driver disks to enable support for new printer hardware.
Accessing the Printers Utility
To install a new printer in Windows 3.11, users navigated through the Program Manager:
- Open the Main program group.
- Double-click the Control Panel icon.
- Double-click the Printers icon to open the configuration window.
Alternatively, users could access this same configuration dialog from within the Print Manager utility by navigating to the top menu and selecting Options, then clicking Printer Setup.
Installing Built-In Drivers
Once the Printers dialog was open, the window displayed a list of currently installed printers. To add a new model:
- Click the Add >> button. This expanded the dialog box to reveal the "List of Printers" supported natively by Windows 3.11.
- Scroll through the alphabetical list to find the specific manufacturer and printer model.
- Select the desired model and click Install.
- Windows would then prompt the user to insert one of the original
Windows 3.11 installation floppy disks (typically Disk 4, 5, or 6,
depending on the disk set) to copy the necessary
.DRVdriver files to the system.
Installing Unlisted or Updated Models
If a printer model was released after Windows 3.11 or was not included in the standard Microsoft driver library, users had to supply third-party drivers provided by the manufacturer:
- In the expanded Printers dialog, scroll to the top of the printer list.
- Select Install Unlisted or Updated Printer and click Install.
- A prompt appeared asking for the location of the driver files,
defaulting to drive
A:\. - Insert the manufacturer's floppy disk containing the OEM driver files and click OK.
- Select the detected model from the disk and complete the installation.
Final Configuration
After the driver files were copied, the utility required assigning
the printer to a physical port (such as LPT1: for standard
parallel connections or a COM port for serial printers).
Users could also click the Setup button to configure
model-specific settings, such as resolution, paper trays, orientation,
and installed memory, before clicking Set As Default
Printer to finalize the setup.
