File to Change Windows 3.11 Desktop Wallpaper
In Microsoft Windows 3.11, desktop environment settings are managed
through initialization files rather than a centralized registry. The
primary file edited to specify or alter the default desktop wallpaper is
WIN.INI. This article explains where this file is located,
the specific section and keys responsible for the wallpaper
configuration, and how to manually apply changes.
The Configuration File: WIN.INI
The desktop background in Windows 3.11 is governed by the
WIN.INI file, typically located in the primary system
directory:
C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI
While users can set the wallpaper via the graphical Control Panel
using the Desktop applet, the system writes those settings directly to
WIN.INI. Manually editing this file allows system
administrators and power users to define default backgrounds without
launching the graphical configuration tools.
Relevant Configuration Section and Keys
Inside WIN.INI, the configuration entries are divided
into bracketed sections. The wallpaper setting resides under the
[Desktop] section.
To configure a wallpaper, modify or add the following keys:
[Desktop]
Wallpaper=C:\WINDOWS\ARCHES.BMP
TileWallpaper=0Wallpaper: Specifies the absolute path and file name of the bitmap image. In Windows 3.11, the image must be an uncompressed.BMP(Bitmap) file. If no directory is specified, Windows looks in theC:\WINDOWSdirectory by default. Leaving this entry blank (Wallpaper=) sets the desktop background to a solid color.TileWallpaper: Determines whether the image repeats across the screen or appears centered. Setting the value to1tiles the bitmap across the display; setting it to0centers the image.
