Windows 2000 NTDSUTIL Tool Functions
The NTDSUTIL command-line tool in Microsoft Windows 2000 is a specialized administrative utility designed for managing, maintaining, and repairing Active Directory database files (NTDS.dit). It provides administrators with low-level access to perform critical operations that cannot be handled through standard graphical user interface (GUI) consoles. This article covers the primary roles and operational capabilities of NTDSUTIL in a Windows 2000 Server environment.
Database Maintenance and Integrity
NTDSUTIL interacts directly with the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database powering Active Directory. Key database operations include:
- Offline Defragmentation: Compacting the
NTDS.ditdatabase file to reduce its size on disk and improve performance. - Integrity Checks: Running low-level ESE checks to detect binary-level corruption in the database tables.
- Semantic Database Analysis: Verifying the consistency and relational integrity of Active Directory objects and attributes against directory schema rules.
Managing FSMO Roles
Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles are unique domain-wide or forest-wide roles assigned to specific domain controllers. While role transfers can normally occur via GUI tools, NTDSUTIL is essential when a designated role holder fails permanently:
- Seizing Roles: Forcibly assigning a FSMO role (Schema Master, Domain Naming Master, RID Master, PDC Emulator, or Infrastructure Master) to an operational domain controller when the original owner is offline or destroyed.
- Transferring Roles: Reassigning roles gracefully through the command line.
Metadata Cleanup
When a Windows 2000 domain controller fails or is permanently removed
without running dcpromo to demote it gracefully, it leaves
behind orphaned directory objects. NTDSUTIL provides the
metadata cleanup menu, allowing administrators to remove
all residual Active Directory and DNS records of the decommissioned
server to prevent replication errors and deadlocks.
Authoritative Restore
In a standard Active Directory recovery, restored objects are overwritten by newer replication data from existing domain controllers. NTDSUTIL enables an Authoritative Restore, which increases the version numbers of selected directory partitions, organizational units (OUs), or specific objects. This ensures that the restored data replicates out to all other domain controllers as the authoritative copy.
Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM) Password Management
Administrators can use NTDSUTIL to reset the local Administrator password for Directory Services Restore Mode without requiring a reboot into safe mode, ensuring secure access to recovery consoles when Active Directory is offline.
LDAP Policy Management
NTDSUTIL allows administrators to view and configure Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) query policies, such as maximum page size, query time limits, and connection limits, to prevent resource exhaustion on domain controllers.
