Silent Install Windows 2000 Command Line Syntax

This guide explains how to initiate an automated, silent installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 via the command line. It covers the specific setup executables for 32-bit and 16-bit environments, the required command-line switches, and the role of the answer file in eliminating interactive user prompts during deployment.

32-Bit Environments (winnt32.exe)

If you are initiating the installation from within an existing 32-bit Windows operating system, use winnt32.exe, located in the I386 directory of the installation media.

The standard command-line syntax is:

winnt32.exe /unattend:answer_file /s:source_path

Syntax Breakdown:

  • /unattend: Automates the setup process. If you specify a path to an answer file (for example, /unattend:C:\unattend.txt), Setup takes configuration parameters directly from that file. If no file is specified, Setup uses the default answers embedded in the installation media.
  • /s:source_path: Specifies the source location of the Windows 2000 setup files (typically the I386 directory on a local drive, network share, or CD-ROM). You can specify multiple /s switches to pull files from redundant locations to speed up copy times.

To run a completely silent installation with no reboot delay, you can include additional switches:

winnt32.exe /unattend:C:\unattend.txt /s:D:\i386 /noreboot

MS-DOS Environments (winnt.exe)

If you are initiating the installation from an MS-DOS prompt or a bootable DOS disk, use winnt.exe, also found in the I386 folder.

The standard command-line syntax is:

winnt.exe /u:answer_file /s:source_path

Syntax Breakdown:

  • /u:answer_file: Instructs Setup to run an unattended installation using the designated script file (such as A:\unattend.txt). Unlike winnt32.exe, using the /u switch requires the /s parameter.
  • /s:source_path: Specifies the path to the installation files.

To avoid the prompt that prompts the user to create emergency repair disks or verify file copies, add the /b switch to enable diskless installation:

winnt.exe /u:A:\unattend.txt /s:E:\i386 /b

Answer File Requirement

For either command to perform a truly "silent" installation without prompting the user for input (such as product key, computer name, or network settings), the specified answer file must contain the following setting in the [Unattended] section:

[Unattended]
UnattendMode = FullUnattended

Setting UnattendMode to FullUnattended ensures that the Windows 2000 Setup GUI suppresses all dialog boxes and uses only the values provided in the script file.
