MS-DOS 6.22 Quick Format Command Parameters

This article explains how to perform a quick format in MS-DOS 6.22 using the FORMAT utility. It details the primary /Q switch required to rapidly clear an existing disk, describes how this process operates at the disk level, and highlights complementary parameters that can be combined with it to automate formatting, make disks bootable, or bypass user prompts.

The Primary Quick Format Parameter: /Q

The core switch used to initiate a quick format in MS-DOS 6.22 is /Q.

FORMAT drive: /Q

When /Q is passed, the FORMAT utility clears the File Allocation Table (FAT) and the root directory structure of the target disk. Unlike a standard format, it does not scan the disk surface for bad sectors (defects), significantly reducing the time required to complete the operation. The /Q parameter can only be used on media that has already been formatted previously.

Additional Parameters Used With /Q

The /Q switch can be combined with several other parameters to modify the formatting process:

  • /U (Unconditional): Performs an unconditional format. When combined as FORMAT drive: /Q /U, it executes an unconditional quick format, overwriting the existing data structures and preventing the MS-DOS UNFORMAT utility from recovering the previous file system data.
  • /S (System Files): Copies operating system files (IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM) to the newly formatted drive immediately after clearing the disk, making the disk bootable.
    FORMAT drive: /Q /S
  • /V[:label] (Volume Label): Specifies a volume label directly from the command line. This avoids the interactive prompt that asks for a volume label upon completion.
    FORMAT drive: /Q /V:DOSDRIVE
  • /F:size (Disk Capacity): Specifies the capacity of the floppy disk to format (such as 720, 1.44, or 2.88). While commonly used for full formats, it can ensure the quick format initializes the FAT to the proper drive density.
    FORMAT A: /Q /F:1.44
  • /B (Reserve Space): Allocates space on the newly formatted disk for hidden system files without actually copying them, allowing SYS.COM to make the drive bootable at a later time.

Undocumented Automation Parameter: /AUTOTEST

For automated batch files, MS-DOS 6.22 includes the undocumented /AUTOTEST switch. When executed:

FORMAT drive: /AUTOTEST

The utility automatically performs an unconditional quick format without prompting the user for confirmation, asking for a volume label, or prompting to format another disk. It can also be paired explicitly as FORMAT drive: /Q /AUTOTEST to achieve completely unattended disk clearing.
