MS-DOS 6.22 FORMAT Bypass Surface Checking
When preparing disks in MS-DOS 6.22, the FORMAT utility
automatically executes a comprehensive surface scan to detect and mark
bad sectors, a process that can take substantial time on larger
partitions. You can bypass this disk surface check by executing the
command with the /Q (Quick format) switch. This article
explains how the /Q parameter works, its exact syntax, and
the operational differences between standard, quick, and unconditional
formatting.
The /Q Parameter
The /Q switch instructs the MS-DOS 6.22
FORMAT command to skip the physical surface scan. Instead
of reading and testing every track and cluster on the storage medium, a
quick format only clears the File Allocation Table (FAT) and the root
directory.
Command Syntax
To format a drive while bypassing the surface check, use the following command structure:
FORMAT drive: /Q
For example, to quickly format drive D: without running
a surface test, enter:
FORMAT D: /Q
How It Works
During a standard format without switches, MS-DOS 6.22 performs two main tasks:
- It initializes the file system structures (FAT and root directory).
- It tests every sector across the entire disk surface to locate defects, re-marking damaged sectors so the operating system will not write data to them.
Applying the /Q switch instructs the utility to skip the
second phase entirely. The format operation finishes in seconds because
the drive heads do not need to traverse every cylinder.
Key Considerations and Limitations
- Pre-formatted Media Requirement: The
/Qparameter only functions on media that has already been formatted at least once. It cannot establish the initial sector layout on a brand-new, unformatted disk. - Bad Sector Risk: Because surface checking is skipped, any physical defects or bad sectors that developed since the previous format will not be identified or mapped out.
- Combining with
/U: If you specifyFORMAT drive: /Q /U, MS-DOS performs an unconditional quick format. This deletes existing data structures permanently without creating the hiddenMIRRORrecovery file, while still bypassing the surface scan.
