How to Customize Mac OS 9 Keyboard Shortcuts

In classic Mac OS 9, users could personalize their workflow by assigning custom shortcuts to the keyboard's function keys using the built-in Keyboard control panel. While the operating system lacked modern macOS system-wide menu shortcut remapping, this dedicated control panel allowed users to quickly map keys F1 through F12 to launch applications, open frequent documents, or run automated scripts. This guide details the exact steps required to configure these shortcuts directly within the operating system.

Accessing the Keyboard Control Panel

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the desktop.
  2. Navigate to Control Panels and select Keyboard.

Assigning Actions to Function Keys

  1. Within the Keyboard control panel window, click the Function Keys... button located near the bottom.
  2. A window listing the available function keys (F1 through F12) will appear on the screen.
  3. Click the button next to the specific function key you wish to customize (e.g., F1, F2).
  4. In the standard file dialog that opens, navigate your hard drive to select the target item. You can assign:
    • Applications: Instantly launch software programs.
    • Documents: Open frequently used text files, spreadsheets, or images.
    • Folders: Quickly access specific directory locations in the Finder.
    • AppleScripts: Execute automated tasks and routines.
    • Sound files: Trigger specific audio alerts.
  5. Click Open or Select to confirm your choice. The name of the selected file or application will now appear next to the chosen function key.

Additional Hot Key Settings

  • Clearing Shortcuts: To remove a shortcut, open the Function Keys dialog, select the assigned key, and click the Clear button.
  • PowerBook Options: On Mac portable systems running OS 9, you can toggle the behavior of the Fn key within this panel to decide whether function keys execute hardware controls (such as volume and screen brightness) or user-defined software shortcuts by default.

Once you have finished mapping your preferred keys, close the control panel window. The shortcuts activate immediately without requiring a system restart.
