Shut Down Mac with Keyboard Shortcut in macOS 13

While macOS 13 Ventura does technically support keyboard shortcuts to power down your computer, the availability and behavior of these combinations depend heavily on your Mac’s hardware. Macs featuring a physical Power or Eject key support a direct shutdown shortcut, whereas modern Macs equipped with Touch ID restrict hardware key combinations to prevent accidental shutdowns. This guide covers the default shortcuts, hardware limitations, and fast keyboard-only alternatives to turn off your Mac running macOS 13.

The Standard Shutdown Shortcut

If you are using an older Mac, a Mac desktop with an older Apple keyboard containing an Eject key, or a third-party keyboard with a dedicated Power key, you can shut down instantly using this combination:

  • Control + Option + Command + Power / Eject

Pressing these keys simultaneously quits all open applications (prompting you to save unsaved documents) and shuts down macOS 13 immediately.

The Touch ID Limitation

If your Mac has a Touch ID sensor (found on modern MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac Magic Keyboards), the standard shortcut does not work. Apple disabled modifier key combinations on the Touch ID button to prevent accidental power operations.

Pressing and holding the Touch ID button will eventually force a hard shutdown, but this should only be used if your system is completely frozen, as it does not allow macOS to close apps safely.

Keyboard-Only Alternatives for Touch ID Macs

If you have a Touch ID Mac and want to shut down without using a mouse or trackpad in macOS 13, use one of the following methods:

1. Menu Bar Navigation via Keyboard

  1. Press Control + F2 (or Fn + Control + F2 depending on your function key settings) to focus on the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
  2. Press the Down Arrow to open the menu.
  3. Press the Up Arrow twice to highlight Shut Down….
  4. Press Return, then press Return again to confirm the shutdown dialog.

2. Using the Terminal

  1. Press Command + Space to open Spotlight.
  2. Type Terminal and press Return.
  3. Type sudo shutdown -h now and press Return.
  4. Enter your Mac’s administrator password and press Return to shut down immediately.

3. Create a Custom Global Shortcut

You can create a native shortcut in macOS 13 using the built-in Shortcuts app:

  1. Open the Shortcuts app via Spotlight.
  2. Click the + icon to create a new shortcut.
  3. In the right-hand search panel, search for Shut Down and add the action to the editor.
  4. Click the Shortcut Details icon (the "i" icon in the sidebar) and check Use as Quick Action.
  5. Click Add Keyboard Shortcut and define your preferred key combination (such as Shift + Control + Command + S).

Once configured, pressing your chosen combination will cleanly shut down your Mac from anywhere in the operating system.
