Migrate Older Mac Backup to macOS 13 Setup
You can migrate your settings, user accounts, and files from an older Mac backup during the initial setup of macOS 13 (Ventura). Apple’s Setup Assistant includes the Migration Assistant utility, which natively supports restoring data from a Time Machine backup, an external drive, or another Mac. This process seamlessly transfers your preferences, network settings, documents, and compatible applications to your new macOS 13 environment.
Requirements Before You Begin
- A complete Time Machine backup of your older Mac stored on an external drive or a network-attached storage (NAS) volume.
- The external drive connected directly to the macOS 13 Mac (using an appropriate USB-C adapter if required) or connected to the same local network.
- Both machines connected to reliable power sources to avoid interruption during the data transfer.
Step-by-Step Migration Process During Initial Setup
- Power on the macOS 13 Mac: Follow the on-screen prompts to select your language, region, accessibility features, and Wi-Fi network.
- Access the Migration Screen: When you reach the Migration Assistant window (labeled "Transfer Information to This Mac"), select the option From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or Startup disk, then click Continue.
- Select Your Source: Connect your Time Machine drive if you haven't already. Choose your backup disk or older Mac from the list of available sources and click Continue.
- Choose the Specific Backup: If prompted, select the specific date and time of the backup you wish to restore.
- Select Information to Transfer: Check the boxes
next to the categories you want to migrate:
- Applications: Transfers compatible installed programs.
- User Accounts: Transfers user profiles, desktop settings, and home folder contents.
- Other Files & Folders: Transfers items stored outside standard user directories.
- System & Network: Transfers Wi-Fi passwords, network configurations, and system preferences.
- Authorize and Begin: If prompted, create a new password or authorize account replacement for any conflicting user accounts. Click Continue to start the transfer.
- Complete Setup: Wait for the transfer progress bar to finish. The duration depends on the size of your data and the connection speed. Once finished, continue with the remaining macOS 13 setup screens (such as Apple ID and FileVault).
What to Do If You Already Completed Setup
If you skipped the migration step during initial setup, you can run the process at any time:
- Open Finder and navigate to Applications > Utilities.
- Launch Migration Assistant and enter your administrator password.
- Follow the same on-screen prompts outlined above to transfer settings and files from your older backup.
Important Compatibility Notes
- 32-Bit Applications: macOS 13 does not support 32-bit applications. Older legacy software transferred from older backups will not launch and must be updated to 64-bit versions.
- Obsolete Settings: Some system preferences from much older versions of macOS may not apply directly due to structural redesigns in macOS 13 Ventura's System Settings interface.
