Manage Touch ID Fingerprints on macOS 13

This guide explains how to manage Touch ID fingerprints on macOS 13 Ventura using the redesigned System Settings app. You will learn the exact steps to locate the Touch ID menu, add new fingerprints, rename existing prints for easier identification, remove unused prints, and customize which features use biometric authentication.

Accessing Touch ID Settings

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, scroll down and click Touch ID & Password.

How to Add a Fingerprint

A Mac can store up to three fingerprints per user account (and up to five across all accounts).

  1. Under the Touch ID section, click Add Fingerprint (represented by a plus icon).
  2. Enter your Mac user password when prompted and click Unlock.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions by repeatedly placing and lifting your finger on the Touch ID sensor until the scan completes.
  4. Click Done.

How to Rename a Fingerprint

Labeling fingerprints helps you quickly identify which fingers are registered.

  1. In the Touch ID & Password menu, locate the fingerprint you want to rename.
  2. Click directly on the label text beneath the fingerprint icon (such as "Finger 1").
  3. Type the new name (e.g., "Right Index") and press Return.

How to Delete a Fingerprint

  1. In the Touch ID & Password menu, hover your mouse cursor over the fingerprint icon you wish to remove.
  2. Click the X icon that appears in the top-left corner of the fingerprint graphic.
  3. Enter your Mac account password to confirm the removal.
  4. Click Delete.

Managing Touch ID Preferences

Below your enrolled fingerprints, you can toggle specific macOS features on or off to control what Touch ID authorizes:

  • Unlocking your Mac: Use your fingerprint instead of entering your password when waking your computer.
  • Apple Pay: Authorize online purchases made via Apple Pay.
  • iTunes Store, App Store & Apple Books: Confirm purchases and downloads without entering your Apple ID password.
  • Password Autofill: Automatically fill saved user names and passwords in Safari and supported apps.
  • Use Touch ID sensor for fast user switching: Quickly switch between macOS user accounts by pressing the sensor.
