macOS 13 Storage Requirements
Upgrading your Mac to macOS 13 (Ventura) requires specific amounts of available drive capacity depending on the operating system you are currently running. This guide covers the exact minimum storage space requirements to successfully download and install macOS Ventura, along with recommended buffers to ensure the installation completes without errors.
Minimum Free Storage Needed
To upgrade to macOS 13, your drive must meet the following minimum capacity thresholds:
- Upgrading from macOS Monterey (macOS 12) or newer: You need a minimum of 25 GB of available storage.
- Upgrading from an earlier release (macOS Big Sur, Catalina, or earlier): You need up to 35 GB to 44 GB of available storage.
- Installer File Size: The macOS Ventura installer package itself requires approximately 12.5 GB of space to download from the App Store or Software Update.
Because the system must download the complete installer package, uncompress the files, and retain your existing system files during the migration, the temporary space required during the update process is significantly larger than the size of the operating system itself. For optimal safety and to prevent installation failures, maintaining at least 35 GB to 40 GB of free space is strongly recommended before beginning the process.
How to Check Your Current Available Space
Before starting the upgrade, verify your available storage:
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select About This Mac.
- Click the Storage tab (or More Info > Storage Settings on newer versions).
- Review the available capacity on your primary startup drive (Macintosh HD).
Preparing Your Mac if Storage Is Low
If your Mac does not meet the minimum storage requirements, take the following steps to free up space:
- Empty the Trash: Deleted items remain on your drive until the Trash is permanently emptied.
- Use Built-in Storage Management: Go to About This Mac > Storage > Manage to access Apple's native recommendations, such as storing files in iCloud or reviewing large files.
- Remove Old Installers and Backups: Check the
Downloadsfolder for unused.dmgor.pkgfiles, and remove old local iOS device backups. - Offload Files Temporarily: Move large libraries, video files, or photo archives to an external drive or cloud service until the upgrade is complete.
