macOS 13 Accessibility Background Sounds for Focus
macOS 13 Ventura includes a built-in accessibility feature called Background Sounds, designed to mask unwanted environmental noise and minimize distractions to improve focus. This guide covers the six ambient sound profiles available natively on your Mac, explains their sonic characteristics, and provides clear steps to enable and customize them directly from your system settings.
Available Background Sounds in macOS 13
Apple provides six distinct audio options within macOS 13. These range from synthetic noise profiles to natural environmental soundscapes:
- Balanced Noise: A blend of higher and lower frequencies, similar to pink noise. It provides a smooth, consistent sound that effectively covers conversational chatter without sounding overly harsh.
- Bright Noise: A higher-pitched, treble-heavy static profile comparable to standard white noise. It is ideal for masking sharp, sudden environmental sounds like typing or clicking.
- Dark Noise: A deeper, bass-heavy tone similar to brown noise. It offers a low-frequency, muffled rumble akin to distant thunder or an airplane cabin, making it gentle on the ears during long work sessions.
- Ocean: A rhythmic recording of ocean waves washing ashore, providing an alternating rise and fall in volume that promotes calm and steady focus.
- Rain: The steady, continuous sound of falling rain, suitable for blocking out uneven background noise with natural white noise properties.
- Stream: A continuous, gentle recording of a bubbling freshwater brook or creek, offering a light, organic soundscape.
How to Enable and Configure Background Sounds
You can turn on and customize these sounds natively without installing third-party software.
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner and select System Settings.
- Select Accessibility from the left sidebar.
- Scroll to the Hearing category and click on Audio.
- Locate the Background sounds section and toggle the switch to the On position.
- Click Configure to open the customization options.
Customization Options
Inside the configuration panel, you can adjust the listening experience to match your workflow:
- Background Sound: Select the dropdown menu to choose between Balanced Noise, Bright Noise, Dark Noise, Ocean, Rain, or Stream. (The first time you select a sound, macOS will automatically download high-quality audio files for it.)
- Background Sound Level: Adjust the slider to set a comfortable volume independent of your system volume.
- Turn off background sounds when your Mac is not in use: Toggle this setting on to automatically pause the audio when your display sleeps or the Mac locks, preserving power.
For faster control, you can add the Hearing shortcut to your menu bar or Control Center via System Settings > Control Center, allowing you to toggle sounds and change volume levels in a single click.
