Install Windows on macOS 13 with Virtualization
Running Windows on macOS 13 (Ventura) is straightforward when using modern virtualization software like Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, or UTM. This guide explains how to identify your Mac's architecture, choose the right hypervisor, and set up a Windows virtual machine without partitioning your hard drive or rebooting your computer.
Step 1: Check Your Mac’s Processor
Before downloading any software, confirm whether your Mac runs on an Intel chip or Apple Silicon (M1/M2).
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select About This Mac.
- Look at the Processor or Chip
line:
- Apple M1 or M2: You must install the ARM-based version of Windows 11.
- Intel: You must install the standard x86/x64 version of Windows 10 or 11.
Step 2: Choose a Virtualization Tool
Select the virtualization application that best matches your budget and technical comfort level:
- Parallels Desktop (Paid, Free Trial available): The most user-friendly option for macOS 13. It automatically downloads and configures Windows 11 for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
- VMware Fusion (Free for Personal Use): A robust tool supporting both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, requiring a free personal-use license from VMware.
- UTM (Free, Open-Source): A completely free hypervisor built specifically for macOS that utilizes QEMU, ideal for budget-conscious users willing to perform manual setup.
Step 3: Install Windows (Method by Tool)
Option A: Using Parallels Desktop (Recommended for Beginners)
- Download and install Parallels Desktop on your Mac.
- Launch the application. The Installation Assistant will open automatically.
- If using an Apple Silicon Mac, Parallels will prompt you with: "Get Windows 11 from Microsoft."
- Click Install Windows. Parallels will download the correct Windows 11 ARM image and complete the installation automatically.
- Once finished, sign in to your Windows desktop. Parallels Tools will install in the background to enable clipboard sharing, file syncing, and full resolution support.
Option B: Using VMware Fusion
- Download and install VMware Fusion Player.
- Open VMware Fusion and select Create a custom virtual machine or click Get Windows from Microsoft.
- On Apple Silicon, select the automated Windows 11 ARM download tool inside Fusion. On Intel, provide a downloaded Windows 10 or 11 ISO file from Microsoft’s official website.
- Set the virtual hardware parameters (allocate at least 4 CPU cores and 8 GB of RAM for smooth performance).
- Follow the standard on-screen Windows setup prompts to finalize installation.
Option C: Using UTM
- Download and install UTM.
- Open UTM and click the + (Create a New Virtual Machine) button.
- Select Virtualize (fastest option for matching architectures).
- Select Windows.
- Check the box to Install Windows 10 or higher and allow UTM to fetch the necessary Spice guest tools and Windows ISO.
- Follow the prompts to configure storage (minimum 64 GB recommended) and launch the VM to proceed through the standard Windows installer.
Step 4: Complete Post-Installation Setup
- Install Guest Additions / Tools: Whether using Parallels, VMware, or UTM, always install the included guest agent (Parallels Tools, VMware Tools, or SPICE Guest Tools). This enables dynamic display resizing, shared clipboards, and smooth mouse integration.
- Run Windows Update: Go to Settings > Windows Update inside the virtual machine and install all pending security patches and driver updates.
- Activate Windows: Enter a valid Windows license key under Settings > System > Activation to unlock all personalization and system features.
