Import Chrome Bookmarks to Safari on macOS 13
Switching your default browser to Safari on macOS 13 (Ventura) does not mean leaving your saved websites behind. This guide walks you through the fastest ways to transfer your Google Chrome bookmarks directly into Safari, utilizing Safari's built-in direct migration tool as well as a manual HTML file export method.
Method 1: Import Directly from Chrome (Fastest)
Safari includes a native feature that can read and transfer your Chrome data directly without manually saving files.
- Quit Google Chrome: Ensure Chrome is completely closed by pressing Command + Q while Chrome is active.
- Open Safari: Launch the Safari browser on your Mac.
- Open the Import Menu: In the top menu bar, click File, hover over Import From, and select Google Chrome….
- Select Items: A dialog box will appear. Check the box next to Bookmarks (you can also select Passwords and History if desired).
- Import: Click the Import button. If prompted, enter your Mac's administrator password or authenticate with Touch ID to authorize access.
Your imported bookmarks will now appear in your Safari Bookmarks menu or inside an "Imported from Chrome" folder on your Favorites bar.
Method 2: Import via an HTML File (Manual)
If you experience permission issues or want to selectively choose files, you can manually export your bookmarks from Chrome as an HTML document.
Step 1: Export from Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.
- Navigate to Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark manager (or press Option + Command + B).
- In the Bookmark Manager window, click the three dots in the upper-right corner (next to the search bar).
- Select Export bookmarks.
- Choose a location to save the
.htmlfile (such as your Desktop) and click Save.
Step 2: Import into Safari
- Open Safari.
- In the top menu bar, click File and select Import From > Bookmarks HTML File….
- Locate and select the
.htmlfile you just saved from Chrome. - Click Import.
Once complete, Safari will confirm the import, and your bookmarks will be accessible in Safari's sidebar (accessible by pressing Control + Command + 1).
