How to Unlock Mac with Apple Watch on macOS 13

This guide explains how to automatically unlock your Mac running macOS 13 (Ventura) using an Apple Watch, eliminating the need to type your password every time you wake the device. It covers the essential hardware and account requirements, step-by-step instructions for enabling the feature in System Settings, and basic troubleshooting tips to ensure seamless operation.

Prerequisites

Before setting up the feature, ensure your devices meet these criteria:

  • Apple ID: Both your Mac and Apple Watch must be signed in to the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices.
  • Security Settings: Your Apple Watch must have a passcode enabled and be unlocked on your wrist. Your Mac must not be using internet sharing or screen sharing.

Steps to Enable Auto Unlock in macOS 13

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. In the sidebar, scroll down and click Touch ID & Password (or Login Password if your Mac does not feature Touch ID).
  4. Scroll to the Apple Watch section on the right.
  5. Turn on the toggle switch next to your Apple Watch's name.
  6. When prompted, enter your Mac’s administrator password and click Unlock or press Return.

How to Use the Feature

  • Waking Your Mac: Wear your unlocked Apple Watch and wake your Mac by opening the lid, pressing a key, or tapping the trackpad. Your watch will gently vibrate, confirming that your Mac is unlocked.
  • Approve App and Admin Requests: In macOS 13, you can also use your Apple Watch to approve administrative requests (such as viewing passwords in Safari or installing software). When prompted for a password on your Mac, double-click the side button on your Apple Watch to approve the request.

Troubleshooting

If the toggle fails to enable or your Mac does not unlock:

  • Restart both devices: Reboot your Mac and restart your Apple Watch.
  • Toggle Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth off and back on via the Control Center on your Mac.
  • Check Proximity: Make sure your Apple Watch is worn securely on your wrist and is within close proximity (a few feet) of the Mac.
