How to Turn Off Stage Manager in macOS 13

Apple introduced Stage Manager in macOS 13 (Ventura) as a new way to organize windows, but many users prefer the classic, overlapping window management system. This guide explains how to quickly disable Stage Manager and return to the traditional Mac desktop experience using either the Control Center or System Settings.

Method 1: Turn Off Stage Manager via Control Center

The fastest way to toggle Stage Manager on or off is through the macOS menu bar:

  1. Click the Control Center icon in the upper-right corner of your screen (the icon resembles two toggle switches).
  2. Locate the Stage Manager tile.
  3. Click the Stage Manager tile once to turn it off.

The icon will change from highlighted to gray, and your open windows will immediately return to the standard desktop view with your desktop icons visible again.

Method 2: Turn Off Stage Manager via System Settings

If you prefer to manage the feature through system preferences:

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings.
  2. Click Desktop & Dock in the left sidebar.
  3. Scroll down to the Stage Manager section on the right.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Stage Manager to the Off position.

Once disabled, macOS 13 immediately reverts to traditional window management, allowing you to freely minimize, maximize, and stack application windows across your desktop.
