How to Trim Videos in QuickTime on macOS 13

Trimming video clips on macOS 13 is a quick and straightforward process using the native QuickTime Player application. Without needing to install third-party editing software, you can easily remove unwanted footage from the beginning, middle, or end of a video. This guide walks you through the exact steps to open your file, use the built-in trimming controls, and export your newly edited video clip.

Step 1: Open Your Video in QuickTime Player

  1. Locate the video file you want to edit in Finder.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) the file, select Open With, and choose QuickTime Player. Alternatively, launch QuickTime Player from your Applications folder or Spotlight and open the file from the menu bar via File > Open File.

Step 2: Open the Trim Tool

  1. With the video open, click Edit in the top menu bar.
  2. Select Trim from the dropdown menu.
  3. Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut Command + T.

Step 3: Adjust the Trim Handles

Once the Trim mode is active, a yellow trimming bar will appear at the bottom of the playback window:

  1. Click and drag the left yellow handle inward to set the new starting point of your video.
  2. Click and drag the right yellow handle inward to set the new end point of your video.
  3. Drag the playhead (the red vertical line) to check specific frames and ensure your cuts are accurate.

Step 4: Apply the Trim

  1. Click the play button to preview the selected portion of the video.
  2. Once you are satisfied with the cut, click the yellow Trim button located on the right side of the trimming bar. The footage outside the yellow handles will be discarded.

Step 5: Save Your Edited Video

  1. Go to the top menu bar and click File.
  2. Select Save (or press Command + S) to overwrite the original or save it as a new file.
  3. If you want to change the format or resolution, choose File > Export As and select your preferred quality (such as 4K, 1080p, or 720p).
  4. Choose a destination folder, enter a file name, and click Save.
