How to Translate Webpages in Safari on macOS 13
Safari on macOS 13 (Ventura) includes a built-in translation tool that instantly converts foreign-language webpages into your preferred language without the need for third-party extensions. This guide provides a direct walkthrough on how to use the native translation button in Safari's address bar and how to configure system language settings to ensure your desired translation options are always available.
Translating a Webpage Directly in Safari
- Open Safari and navigate to the webpage you want to translate.
- Locate the Smart Search field (the address bar at the top of the window). If the webpage is eligible for translation, a Translate button (an icon displaying two speech bubbles) will appear on the right side of the address bar.
- Click the Translate button.
- Select Translate to [Language] from the drop-down menu.
- The webpage will instantly update to display the translated text.
To return to the original language at any time, click the Translate button again and select View Original.
Adding Preferred Languages in macOS 13
If your desired language does not appear in the translation menu, you must add it through your macOS System Settings:
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
- In the sidebar, click General.
- Select Language & Region on the right side.
- Under the Preferred Languages section, click the + (Add) button.
- Select the language you want to add and click Add.
- Choose whether you want this new language as your primary system language or keep your current primary language.
- Return to Safari. The new language will now be available as an option in the webpage translation menu.
Enabling Offline Translation
To translate pages without sending web content to Apple servers, you can download language packs for on-device processing:
- Go to Apple menu () > System Settings > General > Language & Region.
- Scroll down and click Translation Languages.
- Toggle on On-Device Mode.
- Click Download next to any language you wish to process offline.
