How to Set Up Continuity Camera in macOS 13

Continuity Camera in macOS 13 Ventura allows you to use your iPhone’s advanced rear camera system as a wireless webcam for your Mac. This guide covers the basic system requirements, the exact steps to connect your iPhone to your Mac, and how to enable advanced video features like Desk View, Center Stage, and Studio Light in any video conferencing application.

System Requirements

Before setting up Continuity Camera, ensure your devices meet the following criteria:

  • iPhone: iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later. (Features like Center Stage and Desk View require an iPhone 11 or later; Studio Light requires an iPhone 12 or later).
  • Mac: Any Mac compatible with and running macOS 13 Ventura or later.
  • Apple ID: Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi must be turned on for both devices, and neither device can be sharing its cellular or internet connection.

Step 1: Enable Continuity Camera on Your iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select AirPlay & Handoff.
  4. Toggle the Continuity Camera switch to the On position.

Step 2: Position Your iPhone

Mount your iPhone securely near your Mac’s display at eye level using a compatible MagSafe mount or stand. Ensure the following:

  • The iPhone is locked.
  • The rear cameras are facing you and unobstructed.
  • The phone is placed in landscape orientation for standard video calling.

Step 3: Connect to Your Video Application

Continuity Camera works automatically without requiring extra software or cables.

  1. Open your preferred video application on your Mac (such as FaceTime, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Webex).
  2. Navigate to the app's video or camera settings.
  3. Select your iPhone from the list of available cameras.
  4. Select your iPhone in the audio/microphone settings if you wish to use its built-in microphone.

Your Mac will automatically detect and switch to your iPhone camera when it is placed near the Mac in landscape orientation. You can also connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB-to-Lightning or USB-C cable for a wired connection.

Step 4: Adjust Video Effects

macOS 13 includes built-in video processing tools that can be accessed while using Continuity Camera:

  1. Click the Control Center icon in the top-right corner of the macOS menu bar.
  2. Click Video Effects.
  3. Choose any of the available modes:
    • Center Stage: Keeps you centered in the frame as you move around.
    • Portrait Mode: Blurs the background to keep the focus on you.
    • Studio Light: Dims the background and illuminates your face without external lighting.
    • Desk View: Uses the ultra-wide lens to show your face and an overhead view of your desk simultaneously.
