How to Resize Grouped Windows in macOS Stage Manager
Apple’s Stage Manager in macOS 13 Ventura allows users to group multiple applications together into a single workspace, but managing window sizes within these groups functions differently than standard macOS split-screen modes. While macOS does not natively offer a single-border drag feature to resize multiple grouped windows simultaneously, you can quickly organize, manually adjust, and utilize keyboard-driven tiling methods to achieve the exact layout you need.
The Limitation: Simultaneous Resizing in Stage Manager
In macOS 13, Stage Manager treats each window in a group as an individual layer rather than a locked grid or Split View pair. Because of this architecture:
- There is no shared divider: Dragging the edge of one window will not push, pull, or proportionally resize an adjacent window.
- Windows resize independently: Each window retains its own boundaries and must be resized individually using standard macOS controls.
How to Adjust Windows in a Stage Manager Group
To arrange and resize your grouped windows efficiently, follow these methods:
1. Manual Edge and Corner Adjustments
- Open your grouped workspace in Stage Manager.
- Hover your pointer over the edge or corner of the first window until the resize cursor appears.
- Click and drag the window to your desired dimension.
- Select the second window in the group and drag its edges to align with the first. Tip: Hold the Option (⌥) key while dragging an edge to resize the window outward from its center symmetrically.
2. Using Built-In Window Tiling
You can snap windows within a group to specific halves of the screen to create an organized side-by-side view:
- Hover your cursor over the green full-screen button in the top-left corner of the window.
- Select either Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen.
- Repeat the process for the second window in the group, selecting the opposite side. Note: This snaps each window to fill half the visible workspace without entering full-screen mode, fitting them neatly alongside the Stage Manager side strip.
Workaround for True Simultaneous Resizing
If your workflow requires synchronized, simultaneous resizing of adjacent windows (where adjusting one window automatically resizes the neighboring window), you must use third-party window management software alongside Stage Manager.
Utilities such as Rectangle Pro, Magnet, or BetterTouchTool allow you to set up adjacent tiling layouts that support synchronized border dragging and batch keyboard shortcuts, overcoming the native limitations of macOS 13's Stage Manager.
