How to Reopen Closed Tabs in Safari on Mac

Accidentally closing an active tab while browsing can interrupt your workflow, but Safari on macOS 13 (Ventura) provides multiple built-in ways to quickly recover your lost webpages. Whether you need to restore the single tab you just closed, view a list of recently closed tabs, or recover an entire previous browsing session, you can do so in seconds using simple keyboard shortcuts, menu options, or your browsing history.

Use the Keyboard Shortcut

The fastest way to recover your most recently closed tab is via a keyboard shortcut:

  • Press Command (⌘) + Z immediately after closing the tab.
  • Alternatively, press Shift + Command (⌘) + T. This is the universal browser shortcut for reopening closed tabs and works consecutively to reopen multiple recently closed tabs in reverse order.

Use the Edit Menu

If you prefer using the menu bar:

  1. Click Edit in the top Apple menu bar.
  2. Select Undo Close Tab (or press Command + Z).

Click and Hold the New Tab Button

Safari allows you to view a quick list of recently closed tabs directly from the tab bar:

  1. Locate the + (New Tab) button in the upper-right corner of the Safari window.
  2. Click and hold (or right-click) the + button.
  3. A drop-down menu displaying your recently closed tabs will appear.
  4. Click any webpage from the list to reopen it.

Restore via the History Menu

If some time has passed or you have closed multiple tabs:

  1. Click History in the top menu bar.
  2. Hover your cursor over Recently Closed.
  3. Select the specific tab you wish to restore, or click Reopen All Tabs from Last Session if you closed the entire browser window.

Search Your Full Browsing History

For tabs closed earlier in the day or during previous sessions:

  1. Press Command (⌘) + Y (or go to History > Show All History).
  2. Use the search bar in the top-right corner to search by page title or URL.
  3. Double-click the link to open it in a new tab.
