How to Configure Game Controller Mappings in macOS 13
Apple's macOS 13 (Ventura) includes native system-level support for custom game controller mapping, allowing you to rebind buttons, adjust stick sensitivity, and create dedicated profiles without third-party software. This guide covers how to pair your controller, access the Game Controller settings panel, reassign buttons globally, and configure per-game mappings.
Step 1: Connect Your Controller to Your Mac
Before mapping options appear in the settings menu, you must connect a compatible controller (such as an Xbox Wireless Controller, PlayStation DualShock 4/DualSense, or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller) via Bluetooth or USB.
- Turn on your controller and enter pairing mode.
- On your Mac, go to the Apple menu () > System Settings.
- Select Bluetooth in the sidebar.
- Locate your controller under Nearby Devices and click Connect.
Step 2: Open the Game Controller Settings
Once paired, a dedicated "Game Controller" menu will become visible in your system settings.
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu or Dock.
- Scroll down the left sidebar and click Game Controller. (Note: This option is hidden unless a controller is actively connected).
Step 3: Remap Controller Buttons Globally
To change how buttons behave across all games by default:
- Under the Profiles section, select the Default Controls option (or select your connected controller directly under My Controllers).
- Click on the button or input you wish to change (e.g., A / Cross, B / Circle, bumpers, or triggers).
- Choose the replacement action or button from the drop-down list.
- Adjust additional input toggles if desired, such as swapping thumbsticks, inverting the vertical/horizontal axes, or disabling haptic feedback.
- Click Done to apply your changes.
Step 4: Create Game-Specific Controller Profiles
If you prefer different button layouts for different games, you can generate customized profiles.
- In the Game Controller menu, click the Add (+) button at the bottom of the Profiles list, or select Add Profile.
- Name the profile (e.g., the title of the game).
- Remap the buttons specifically for this configuration.
- Under the App Customizations section, click the Add (+) button.
- Select the game application installed on your Mac, then assign your custom profile to that specific app.
macOS 13 will now automatically switch to your chosen profile whenever that game is launched.
