How Safari Shared Tab Groups Work in macOS 13
Shared Tab Groups in macOS 13 Ventura allow users to collaborate on web browsing sessions in real time directly within Safari. This feature enables multiple participants to view, add, remove, and organize a shared set of browser tabs simultaneously using iCloud syncing. This guide explains how to set up Shared Tab Groups, how real-time synchronization and collaborator tracking function, and how to manage group permissions effectively.
Setting Up a Shared Tab Group
To create a Shared Tab Group, open Safari on macOS 13 and display the sidebar by clicking the Sidebar icon in the top-left corner. From the sidebar, click the "New Tab Group" button and select an empty group or convert an existing set of open tabs. Once created, click the ellipsis (...) next to the Tab Group name or select the Share button in the Safari toolbar. Choose your preferred sharing method, such as Messages or Mail, and invite your contacts. Participants must be signed in to their Apple ID and running compatible software (macOS 13, iOS 16, or iPadOS 16 or later) with Safari enabled in iCloud settings.
Real-Time Synchronization
Once participants accept the invitation, the Tab Group functions as a live, collaborative workspace. Every member with access can open new tabs, close unwanted tabs, or reorder the existing ones. Any modifications made by one user sync instantly across all participants' devices via iCloud. If a participant navigates to a new webpage within a tab, the destination updates for everyone in the group, ensuring that all collaborators remain on the same page.
Collaborator Presence and Activity
Safari provides visual indicators to show active collaboration within the Tab Group. When another participant is actively viewing a specific tab, their contact avatar appears directly on that tab in the tab bar. This live presence feature prevents collaborators from unknowingly interfering with each other's work or duplicating searches.
Communication Integration
Shared Tab Groups are tightly integrated with macOS communication tools. In the Safari toolbar, clicking the collaboration icon reveals the list of active participants alongside quick-action buttons. From this menu, users can instantly send a message to the group via the Messages app, initiate an audio or video call through FaceTime, or launch a SharePlay session to browse together interactively.
Managing Permissions and Access
The person who initiates the Shared Tab Group serves as the owner and maintains administrative control over access. By clicking the collaboration icon in the toolbar and selecting "Manage Shared Tab Group," the owner can invite additional participants, remove existing members, or stop sharing entirely. Stopping the share converts the workspace back into a standard, local Tab Group accessible only by the owner, while removing it from the devices of all former participants.
