Fix Minimized Windows Disappearing in Stage Manager

If your minimized windows seem to vanish while using Stage Manager on macOS 13 Ventura, it is due to how macOS fundamentally handles the minimize command alongside Stage Manager's grouping system. When you minimize a window, Stage Manager removes it entirely from the active desktop and the left-hand thumbnail strip, routing it straight to the Dock instead. This guide explains why this default behavior occurs, where your missing windows are located, and how to configure your settings to prevent them from disappearing.

Why Minimized Windows Disappear

Stage Manager is designed to group active applications into sets on the left side of your screen. When you click the yellow minimize button (or press Command + M), macOS assumes you want to completely remove that window from your active workflow.

Consequently, the window is removed from the Stage Manager shelf. It does not stay in the left-hand app group because Stage Manager only displays active, unminimized windows.

Where Your Windows Go

Your minimized windows have not closed; they have been moved to the Dock:

  1. Standard Dock area: If you look at the right side of your Dock (next to the Trash can), you may see individual thumbnails of your minimized windows.
  2. Inside the App Icon: If you have the setting enabled to minimize windows into application icons, the window will be hidden directly inside the app's Dock icon.

To restore a minimized window:

  • Click its thumbnail on the right side of the Dock.
  • If minimized into the app icon, right-click (or Control-click) the application icon in the Dock and select the window from the menu, or swipe down with three fingers on a trackpad to trigger App Exposé.

How to Stop Windows from Disappearing

To make your windows easier to find and manage in Stage Manager, adjust the following macOS 13 settings:

1. Stop Minimizing into App Icons

Grouping minimized windows inside an app icon makes them almost invisible when using Stage Manager.

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Click Desktop & Dock in the left sidebar.
  3. Locate Minimize windows into application icon and toggle it Off.

Now, when you minimize a window, it will create a distinct, visible thumbnail on the right side of the Dock.

2. Change How You Switch Tasks

Stage Manager is built to replace the traditional minimize action:

  • Switch Groups Instead of Minimizing: Simply click another app group in the left Stage Manager strip. Your current window will move to the shelf without being minimized, remaining fully visible and accessible.
  • Hide Instead of Minimize: Press Command + H to hide an app. While this also removes it from view, clicking the app icon in the Dock or Stage Manager immediately unhides all windows belonging to that application at once, rather than requiring you to manually restore them one by one.
