Fix Continuity Camera Bluetooth on macOS 13

Continuity Camera allows you to use your iPhone as a high-definition webcam for your Mac, but Bluetooth handshake failures can prevent the devices from connecting properly. This guide walks you through diagnosing and fixing Bluetooth pairing problems between macOS 13 Ventura and iOS so you can restore your wireless webcam setup quickly.

Verify Basic Continuity Requirements

Before altering system settings, verify that both devices meet Apple's foundational Continuity criteria:

  • Apple ID: Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication.
  • Proximity: The iPhone and Mac must be near each other with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • No Active Sharing: Neither device can be sharing an active cellular connection (Personal Hotspot) or an active AirPlay stream.

Toggle Continuity Camera on iPhone

Sometimes the software switch on iOS fails to register incoming Bluetooth requests from macOS.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to General > AirPlay & Handoff.
  3. Locate Continuity Camera.
  4. Toggle the switch Off, wait five seconds, and toggle it back On.

Cycle Bluetooth on Both Devices

Resetting the local Bluetooth radios clears temporary cache errors that block handshakes.

  • On iPhone: Open Settings > Bluetooth, toggle Bluetooth off, wait ten seconds, and toggle it back on. Avoid doing this through the Control Center, as it only disconnects accessories rather than fully resetting the radio.
  • On Mac: Open the Control Center from the menu bar, click Bluetooth, and toggle it off and back on.

Restart the macOS Bluetooth Daemon

If Bluetooth remains unresponsive in macOS 13, restart the background Bluetooth process (bluetoothd) using Terminal.

  1. Open Terminal via Spotlight (Command + Space, type Terminal).

  2. Enter the following command and press Return:

    sudo pkill bluetoothd
  3. Enter your Mac's administrator password when prompted.

  4. The Bluetooth daemon will immediately terminate and automatically restart.

Remove Conflicting Bluetooth Profiles

Corrupted accessory profiles can interfere with system-level Continuity handshakes.

  1. Open System Settings on macOS 13.
  2. Select Bluetooth from the sidebar.
  3. Under My Devices, locate any unused or problematic Bluetooth devices.
  4. Hover over the device, click the i (Info) icon, and select Forget This Device.
  5. Restart your Mac.

Re-authenticate Handoff via Apple ID

If Bluetooth is functioning for other devices but Continuity Camera still will not connect, refresh the secure token shared between your devices.

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff and toggle Handoff off, then on.
  2. On your Mac, go to System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff.
  3. Turn off Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices, wait a moment, and turn it back on.
  4. Reboot both the Mac and iPhone to finalize the sync.
