Do You Need a Mount for Continuity Camera?

Continuity Camera in macOS 13 (Ventura) allows you to use your iPhone as a high-quality Mac webcam. While you are not technically required to buy a special mount to enable the feature, having one is strongly recommended. The software only requires your iPhone to be positioned horizontally, locked, and stationary near your Mac; however, keeping the phone balanced and angled properly without dedicated hardware is difficult.

The Technical Requirements

Apple does not enforce any hardware detection for mounts. Continuity Camera activates automatically as long as the following conditions are met:

  • Your iPhone runs iOS 16 or later (iPhone XR or newer).
  • Your Mac runs macOS 13 Ventura or later.
  • Both devices are signed in to the same Apple ID with two-factor authentication enabled.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on, and the devices are within range of each other.
  • The iPhone is locked, held in landscape (horizontal) orientation, and kept stationary.

If you lean your iPhone against a book, prop it up on a standard desk stand, or place it on a generic tripod, macOS will still recognize it as a webcam.

Why a Dedicated Mount Matters

Although not mandatory, using an official or purpose-built mount—such as the Belkin iPhone Mount with MagSafe—offers distinct practical advantages:

  • Desk View Functionality: Desk View utilizes the iPhone's Ultra Wide lens to show your face and your desk surface simultaneously. This feature requires the phone to be mounted securely atop your display looking slightly downward. Without a proper mount, Desk View is virtually impossible to use.
  • Proper Eye-Level Framing: Propping your phone against an object on your desk creates an unflattering upward angle. A monitor mount places the camera directly above your screen, matching standard webcam placement.
  • Stability: The rear camera system provides the best quality, but it also creates an uneven back surface on modern iPhones. MagSafe mounts secure the phone firmly and prevent accidental slips or disconnections during video calls.

You do not need to purchase a specific branded mount to use Continuity Camera, but you will need some reliable way to keep your iPhone stationary in landscape orientation at display height for an optimal experience.
