Disconnect iPad from Universal Control in macOS 13
This guide explains how to disconnect an iPad linked via Universal Control in macOS 13 Ventura without disabling your Mac's Bluetooth. By managing your display connections directly through the macOS Control Center, System Settings, or from the iPad itself, you can instantly break the connection while keeping your Bluetooth peripherals, such as wireless mice, keyboards, and headphones, fully functional.
Method 1: Disconnect via the macOS Control Center
The fastest way to disconnect the iPad without altering your Bluetooth settings is through the Mac menu bar.
- Click the Control Center icon (two toggle switches) in the top-right corner of your menu bar.
- Click the Display panel.
- Under the Link keyboard and mouse to: section, locate your iPad.
- Click on the iPad's name to deselect it. The cursor and keyboard control will instantly unlink from the device.
Method 2: Disconnect via System Settings
You can also manage active displays and linked devices within the Ventura System Settings.
- Click the Apple menu () and select System Settings.
- Select Displays from the sidebar on the left.
- Look for your iPad displayed in the arrangement window or listed under linked displays.
- Click the iPad to open its options, then select Disconnect (or set it to stop linking the keyboard and pointer).
Method 3: Disconnect from the iPad
If you prefer to disconnect from the iPad directly, you can do so without altering settings on your Mac.
- Put the iPad to sleep: Press the Top (Power) button on your iPad to lock it. This automatically severs the Universal Control session.
- Move out of range: Taking the iPad outside of the local connection range will disconnect the session while keeping the Mac's Bluetooth active.
