Check Battery Cycle Count and Health in macOS 13
Monitoring your MacBook's battery condition helps you determine its longevity and whether it requires service. In macOS 13 Ventura, Apple relocated several system settings, changing how you view hardware metrics. This guide explains how to quickly find both your battery health percentage (maximum capacity) and the exact battery cycle count using native macOS tools.
How to Check Battery Health Percentage
To view the current maximum capacity percentage and overall battery condition:
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings.
- In the left sidebar, scroll down and click Battery.
- Locate the Battery Health section on the right and click the Info (ⓘ) button next to the status.
- A pop-up window will display:
- Battery Condition: Typically reads "Normal" or "Service Recommended."
- Maximum Capacity: The percentage of battery capacity relative to when it was new.
How to Check Battery Cycle Count
To find the exact number of charge cycles your battery has completed:
- Press and hold the Option (⌥) key on your keyboard.
- While holding the key, click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner.
- Select System Information (this replaces "About This Mac" when Option is held).
- In the left sidebar, navigate to the Hardware section and click Power.
- Look under the Health Information header in the
main pane to find:
- Cycle Count: The total number of complete discharge and recharge cycles.
- Condition: The general operational state of the battery.
Understanding the Results
- Maximum Capacity: A new battery starts at 100%. Apple considers a battery degraded if its maximum capacity drops below 80% within its warranty or AppleCare coverage period.
- Cycle Count: Most modern MacBooks are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles. Once you reach or exceed this limit, you may notice a decrease in battery runtime.
